The good and the bad:
I ordered the MFJ-1846 antenna through R&L in 2021. The kit came quickly but contained the wrong spreaders and was missing screws. After some emails and phone time with both R&L and MFJ, MFJ stepped up and supplied the correct spreaders and missing screws. About a 6 months later, I brought in a tower climber to address a poorly soldered coax connection (MFJ supplied). Then another 6 months later a spreader snapped — on a nice day — not due to any sort of weather event. MFJ quickly supplied a replacement without question, but I had to bring in a tower climber to take the beam down so that it could be repaired and then reinstalled. A long and expensive day.
Despite these issues, I really like the antenna. The performance is great — 2 elements on 6 bands in a light-weight package. Seems to do well in wind and ice, again despite the defective spreader.
So, in summary a hex-beam is a good performing antenna and I highly recommend it. The geometry of the antenna can make it a bit treacherous for installation (lots of wires, top heavy.) You may want to buy-up with a different (non-MFJ) supplier because I quickly exhausted any savings with the MFJ version, bringing in a climber to deal with issues with the supplied materials.
Hope you find this information helpful in your antenna selection process.
